Who is Panamona?

Panamona Landscape Design is run by Arlyn Beyerle. With an undergraduate degree in landscape architecture and a postgraduate degree in Urban Horticulture at the University of Melbourne’s renowned Burnley campus, as well as years of experience gardening and landscaping throughout Melbourne’s exclusive inner suburbs, Arlyn has brought his skills and knowledge back to North West Tasmania to create and curate thoughtful, functional and beautiful gardens in his home state.

Having developed a love of the outdoors from a very young age and become a keen bushwalker, his designs are often inspired by the natural environment, whether that be through the use of native plants or naturalistic planting styles. He is also passionate about encouraging and facilitating people’s connection with nature through design. This love of nature has also driven him to design (and live) environmentally consciously, by sourcing local materials and plants, reusing or recycling materials, encouraging biodiversity, minimising plastic and prioritising the use of drought tolerant plants and water saving measures.

Panamona is a combination of Panatana (Rivulet) and Tullamona (Creek) - the two waterways that flow through and converge on Arlyn’s family farm. Their meeting is one of the elements that make the Beyerle’s property unique, and grounds them geographically within the broader landscape. The waterways themselves have shaped the property and the surrounding landscapes through drought and flood, playing a significant role in determining the Spirit of Place, or Genius loci of the farm. This is a concept that describes the inherent, intangible character or atmosphere that a place possesses.

Every garden, old and new, has its own spirit of place, and this is a concept that Arlyn is passionate about exploring within his designs, by considering elements such as the geographical and historical context of a site and its surroundings, its custodians and occupants (human or otherwise) and any built or natural features present on site. By taking all of this into account, we can create landscapes that seamlessly feel as if they belong within their surroundings.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we work and live: the Punnilerpanner clan of the North Nation. We recognise the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to land, water and community, and pay our respects to elders; past, present and emerging.

It would be remiss of us to discuss spirit of place and not reference the Punnilerpanner people and their historic and ongoing stewardship on the landscapes of Panatana/ Panatina, or the Port Sorell area, where we reside.
